The trouble with soda pop, from Dr. Greenberg
At Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, we know that when you sit down to dinner or grab a sandwich for lunch, you wouldn’t have a side of nine teaspoons of sugar. But that’s exactly what you’re taking in when you pair a meal with a 12-ounce can of soda pop.
Soft drinks are a poor choice for your overall health, since they have no nutritional value, and they contain sugar and caffeine. And when it comes to your teeth, soft drinks can cause big trouble. The steep servings of sugar create the perfect condition for cavities to form, while the phosphoric and citric acids in soda pop can erode and weaken your enamel – the outer coating on your teeth – making it tougher for your teeth to withstand the onslaught of sugar.
Both the Canadian and American Dental Associations recommend limiting your intake of soft drinks. And if you do occasionally indulge in a fizzy beverage, it’s a good idea to drink it with a straw, to reduce exposure to your teeth. Brushing your teeth afterward, or at least swishing with water, can help remove the sugar from your teeth.
Having trouble cutting back? Try these tricks to help wean yourself from a steady diet of soft drinks:
--Don’t quit cold turkey: Start by swapping one soda each day with an alternate drink, preferably water. Gradually increase your swaps until you’re down to one soft drink a day, then one every two days, then one a week, and so on.
--Switch to tea: If you’re looking for a source of caffeine, tea is much healthier than soda pop. Just remember not to add nine teaspoons of sugar to it.
--Switch to seltzer: If it’s the fizz or the flavor you’re after, try a sugar-free flavored water or seltzer.
--Remember your goals: If you’re wavering in your commitment to cut back on soda pop, remember the health problems it can cause.
--Be patient: Adjusting a habit doesn’t happen overnight. Give yourself a reasonable amount of time to change your diet.

Talking retainers with Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics
If you recently completed treatment with Dr. Vickie Greenberg, we’d like to congratulate you! Again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Greenberg will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Greenberg is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:
* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).
We hope this helps! You can always contact our team if you have any questions on Facebook!

Dr. Greenberg & Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, honoring our veterans
Happy Veteran's Day! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the veterans and those currently on active duty who have put their lives on the line for the freedoms we all enjoy.
In celebration of Veteran’s Day, Dr. Greenberg and our entire team at Pasadena's Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics would like to share a few fun facts about our flag, our national holiday, and our country’s history!
-Veteran's Day, a day that was originally called Armistice Day, is a time to thank and honor the men and women who have served in our military.
- President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the official legislation for Veteran's Day on June 1, 1954, changing the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day
-There are 23.2 million veterans in the U.S.
-The flag was first approved by Congress on June 14, 1777
-Each of the flag’s colors signify different American values - red is for valor and zeal, white is for hope, purity, and cleanliness of life, and blue is for heaven, loyalty, sincerity, justice, and truth
-Research by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) helped develop the CAT Scan, the cardiac pacemaker, and the “Seattle Foot” to give those hurt the ability to run and jump
-When the flag is displayed next to another flag against a wall, the U.S. flag should be on its own right (on the left side when facing the wall).
-Veteran's Day is often confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring the men and women who died while serving our country, or as a result of injuries that incurred in battle. Veteran's Day honors and gives thanks to all veterans who served in our military.
-There are five states with over 1 million veterans in their population – California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania.
Thanks again to our veterans! We are so thankful for all who have and are currently serving in the U.S. and abroad.

What do you enjoy most about fall?
It’s fall here at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, a time when families begin to make plans for Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. But before you go celebrating, we wanted to ask you, our wonderful patients, "How are you spending your time this fall?" Our team would love to hear about your favorite places for eating, shopping, and entertainment here in the Pasadena area and across Southern California. We are interested in learning about what makes our unique community “yours.”
Feel free to post your responses on our Facebook page, or give us a call! Have a wonderful weekend!

What's the deal with Halloween candies & treats?
For parents worried about their kids going overboard on candies, sugar and other sweets, Halloween is a dreaded annual event (no pun intended).
All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as your braces! With Halloween just two days away, Dr. Vickie Greenberg and our team know all that candy is making its rounds around Altadena, Pasadena and surrounding neighborhoods. Instead of telling kids to avoid candy altogether, one orthodontist decided to show his patients the good kinds of candy to eat with braces and the kind to avoid. We encourage you to check this video out and we hope everyone has a fun, safe and scary Halloween!

Ask Dr. Greenberg: Why visit the dentist during my orthodontic treatment?
Dr. Vickie Greenberg wants to know: Are you brushing your teeth twice a day during your orthodontic treatment? If the answer happens to be yes, that’s what we want to hear! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every six months, in addition to brushing your teeth a couple times a day (and, of, course, seeing Dr. Greenberg during your treatment). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health while you're in braces!
A dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.
During an oral exam your doctor can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing.
If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call, ask Dr. Greenberg during your next visit or ask us on Facebook! We'd be happy to recommend a dentist in Pasadena, Altadena and the greater San Gabriel Valley!

Ask Dr. Greenberg: Am I too old for braces?
Absolutely not. At the orthodontic office of Dr. Vickie Greenberg, no one is "too old" for braces. Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. In fact, one out of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21 and - not only that - but our staff recently read a statistic that the number of adults getting orthodontic treatment has actually climbed 24 percent since 1996!
Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely, we might add—to invest in orthodontics.
If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Greenberg would love to have you visit for a consultation at our convenient Altadena office. Please give us a call at (626) 768-7766 to set one up!

October is National Orthodontic Health Month!
For those of our patients who don't know, October is National Orthodontic Health Month. This month-long event is organized by our pals at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.
Dr. Vickie Greenberg and our staff realize this is a great opportunity for us and to raise awareness about the importance of oral hygiene. National Orthodontic Health Month also aims to recognize the dedicated work of orthodontists like Dr. Greenberg and other dental professional in Pasadena.
The AAO recommends patients avoid the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:
• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice
If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call, ask us on Facebook or ask Dr. Greenberg during your visit this month!

September is National Childhood Injury Prevention Month!
With fall sports beginning for a lot of our patients at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, we thought we'd remind our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this fall.
Dr. Greenberg will tell you that you should ALWAYS wear a mouth guard when playing sports, but especially this month. Why? September is National Childhood Injury Prevention Month.
More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.
Our staff strongly encourage you to head over to the American Association of Orthodontists' website for a quick primer on the importance of mouth guards and facial protection.
We hope this helps you remember to always wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in fall sports around Pasadena! We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions! Have a great weekend!

"I had a phenomenal two years here at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics. The staff has been super nice and friendly to me and they have been a great help. I am very satisfied with my end result; I feel like a different person with my new smile. I loved coming into the office every month and seeing the new decorations; this office is always decked out with memorabilia depending on the season or nearest holiday and it would always brighten my day. I would definitely recommend this office for anyone who wants to get their teeth straightened because it was an successful and worthwhile experience." ~ Elaine
"When I first came to Dr. Greenberg I had partially completed treatment from another orthodontist that I was not pleased with. I was so happy that she was able to get me back on track toward having a perfect smile. My treatment with Invisalign was easy and painless and my experience at her office was always great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Thank you Dr. Greenberg and team - I now have the smile I have always wanted!" ~ Lawrence
"My experience has been amazing! The staff has been the sweetest! They look out for you by asking if you need anything when experiencing discomfort! Compared to other orthodontists, the experience here has been the best so far when talking to my friends about how painful and disrespectful the braces and staff are, but mine are great! I am sad to be done here but at the same time excited about my amazing new smile! I would recommend this to any of my friends or family members because they can be assured that they will have to most amazing smile when their treatment is through! I am so grateful for their work on my teeth because they look beautiful!" ~ Lauren

Back to school with Dr. Vickie Greenberg!
Now that many of the schools in Pasadena, Altadena and surrounding neighborhoods are back in session, Dr. Vickie Greenberg would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance. National Smile Week at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics!
It’s National Smile Week, and a GREAT time to remind our patients at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics to practice good oral hygiene to keep those teeth shining during your orthodontic treatment! This includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding foods that can stain your teeth such as tea and coffee and visiting your general dentist in Pasadena or Altadena as recommended.
And remember to smile at people you come across throughout the week, whether you know them or not. Smiles are contagious, and are a good thing to give and to get. In addition, smiling can actually help you live longer, according to a recent study! We hope you're having a relaxing summer!

Out of all my visits with many offices, I think this one helped me out the most, and again I can’t explain how thankful I am with the results of my teeth. Thank you Dr. Greenberg and staff, and if I ever have any problems with my teeth I know who to go to because Dr. Greenberg’s Orthodontics is the best.” ~ Guimer D.

Dr. Vickie Greenberg, Pasadena's Invisalign Premier Provider
We are proud to announce that Pasadena orthodontist Dr. Vickie Greenberg is a 2010 Invisalign Premier Provider, and with a complimentary consultation can determine if Invisalign treatment is right for you.
You're probably thinking: All right, so what makes an Invisalign Premier Provider so special?
Every doctor who wishes to offer Invisalign treatment must undergo training with the makers of Invisalign, and can then become a certified Invisalign provider. To reach Premier Provider status however, the doctor must complete many successful cases of Invisalign treatment each year. Dr. Greenberg has achieved this distinction through extensive experience using Invisalign, and works with many patients in Altadena, Pasadena and the greater Los Angeles area each year to create beautiful smiles that last a lifetime.
If you're considering Invisalign treatment, you can relax by knowing that you are in great hands at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics! We invite you to give us a call to schedule your complimentary exam for Invisalign or Invisalign Teen! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we hope to hear from you soon!

Dr. Vickie Greenberg, helping you save face this summer
Can you believe summer is officially three days away? We can't! At Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, our staff knows that the summer months bring with them an increase in outdoor activities, as well as a greater chance of our young athletes in treatment damaging their teeth. If you're playing sports this summer, it's important that you consult Pasadena's Dr. Vickie Greenberg for special precautions, such as wearing a mouth guard. Mouth guards are advised for playing spring sports such as baseball, soccer, lacrosse and many, many others.
In case of any accident involving the face this summer, we want you to check your mouth and appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances are damaged, please schedule an appointment to see Dr. Greenberg immediately. And don’t forget to ask us—Dr. Greenberg will be more than happy to provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment!
Our team will always tell you that only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can people with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call at (626) 798-7645 if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment with us.
Enjoy your weekend everyone!

This summer, read! From Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics
With summer only weeks away, some of us at Pasadena's Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics have been thinking increasingly about the importance of reading. Sure it’s easier to go play ball or kick back and watch television, but reading during the summer is a vital step in being prepared for classes in the fall and maintaining your skill level.
Out of ideas for great summer reads? Ask us for suggestions, and our staff (and Dr. Greenberg) would be happy to provide a few titles. You may also ask a local librarian here in Pasadena for some ideas or check out various summer reading lists that we came across.
Happy reading!

Invisalign Teen™ at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics!
Trust us when we say Dr. Vickie Greenberg knows image is everything. And in an age and culture when image is so important, the thought of having metal brackets and wires constantly attached to their pearly whites may intensify the already-delicate confidence of today's teens. But... not to worry! There is a clear alternative to traditional braces! Our team at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics thought we'd remind you that Invisalign Teen™ gives our teens a whole new way to wear braces for a "clearly" amazing smile!
You're probably wondering, "Hey Dr. Greenberg, how does Invisalign teen work?"
Well, actually, much in the same fashion as Invisalign, but with a few added characteristics tailored specifically to teenagers’ lifestyles. For instance, Invisalign Teen is designed with “compliance indicators” that fade from dark to light during the two week period that particular tray is used and once it has faded teens know to change trays. Each aligner comes with up to six free individual replacement aligners in case the original aligner ends up lost or broken. Another big benefit for our patients!
The treatment period for Invisalign Teen varies from nine to 18 months. To learn more about these clear aligners, please contact us at (626) 798-7645 and we’ll answer any questions you may have about Invisalign Teen!

She is also serving in the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society as their vice president and is the Community Health Chairperson.
Isn't it nice to know you have a complete dental expert taking care of your perfecting your smile?

A few tips to stay healthy this spring, from Dr. Greenberg
Just when you think spring has arrived and summer's not far away, you remember it's still cold season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, says that a common cold usually includes sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and coughing. Symptoms can last for up to two weeks, the CDC says.
To promote a healthy and clean environment, Pasadena orthodontist Dr. Vickie Greenberg and our staff give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our office at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces. For the protection of other patients and our team members, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.
And remember to constantly wash your hands and avoid contact with those who are ill! Have a great rest of the week!

Ask Dr. Vickie Greenberg: What is malocclusion?
Malocclusion, or what Dr. Greenberg calls “bad bite,” is the improper alignment of teeth and/or jaws. When your teeth and jaws are not properly aligned, it may impact your bite, the ability to properly care for your teeth, your gum tissue health and even your appearance.
Most people experience some degree of malocclusion, but it generally is not severe enough to require corrective measures. If your malocclusion is serious enough, however, treatment at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics may be necessary to correct the issue.
Dr. Greenberg will tell you that untreated malocclusion can lead undesirable mouth problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, chipped and cracked teeth. The most common solution for malocclusion, of course, is orthodontic treatment. The actual course of treatment, including the length of time you will require braces, will be determined by severity of your malocclusion. The goal of your treatment is to move your teeth into the proper position and correct any misalignment in the jaw. If overcrowding is causing the problem, Pasadena and Altadena orthodontist Dr. Greenberg may need to remove one or more teeth as part of treatment.
At Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, we use the most advanced technology in the field in order to ensure that you receive the best possible results. If you have any questions about malocclusion, please give us a call and we’ll try to answer any questions you may have!

April is National Facial Protection Month! From the team at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics
You may remember that in February, our team at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics blogged about the advantage of wearing a mouth guard when playing sports. Well, we thought a reminder today wouldn’t hurt. You see, April is National Facial Protection Month, and it’s a good time to remind our young athletes about staying safe on the field this spring. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year. By simply wearing a properly fitted mouth guard, these accidents could prevent this along with other traumatic facial injuries, says Dr. Greenberg.
The above video from our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists outlines five quick ways you can protect yourself and your face this spring. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our team at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics. And remember to stay safe and have fun!

Talking retainers with Dr. Vickie Greenberg
If you recently completed treatment with Dr. Greenberg, our professional team would like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been successfully removed, Dr. Greenberg will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, your teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized.
Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes, Dr. Greenberg says. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.
If you have additional questions about retainers or your treatment here at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, please give us a call at (626) 798-7645. Our staff would love to hear from you!
Have a great weekend!

Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month
With February being National Children's Dental Health Month, our team at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics thought we'd share a few good oral hygiene tips with our patients, courtesy of the American Dental Association, or ADA.
• Teeth brushing techniques: It takes only two minutes to properly brush, using short, gentle strokes and devoting extra attention to the gumline, areas around fillings and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth.
• Flossing: hold the floss snugly between thumbs and index finger and place between each of the teeth, making sure to go beneath the gumline and curving the floss around the base of each tooth.
• Snack wisely: choose healthy snacks such as vegetables, fruits and cheese and avoid sticky, chewy candies that can stick to the teeth. If you eat these snacks, make sure to brush after doing so.
• Carbonated or sugary drinks: these beverages create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva, so they should be avoided altogether. When drinking one of these beverages, avoid sipping on it throughout the day. Rather, have a drink and then brush your teeth.
• Regular dental visits: in addition to seeing Dr. Vickie Greenberg, you should visit your dentist regularly (approximately every six months).
National Children's Dental Health Month, now in its 60th year, aims to increase awareness about the importance of kids' oral health. If you have any questions about keeping your mouth healthy, or about your treatment with Dr. Greenberg, please feel free to give us a call!

Getting social with Dr. Vickie Greenberg
At Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics, we embrace technology, whether it’s through the innovative orthodontic treatments we offer, our high-tech web site or video patient testimonials. We love connecting with our patients online, whether it’s by sharing news on our blog or communicating ideas on our fan page. Talking mouth guards, orthodontics and sports with Dr. Vickie Greenberg
Wouldn’t you believe it, it’s almost springtime! The spring months, however, bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their precious mouths and pearly whites. If you play sports, it's important that you consult Dr. Vickie Greenberg for special precautions. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball and soccer. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements Dr. Greenberg is trying to achieve. In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics. And don’t forget to ask us—Dr. Greenberg may recommend the best mouth guard for you.
Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics.

Dr. Vickie Greenberg, Pasadena's premier Invisalign provider
Have you ever considered getting the beautiful straight teeth you've always wanted — without braces? A complimentary consultation with Dr. Vickie Greenberg can determine if Invisalign treatment is right for you.
So, what is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing. So, you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology and has been proven effective. More than 70% of orthodontists in the US and Canada are certified to treat with Invisalign, including Dr. Greenberg.
Why would I want Invisalign?
Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.
How does Invisalign work?
You wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Greenberg has prescribed. You'll visit Greenberg Orthodontics about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.
If you have any questions about Invisalign treatment with Dr. Greenberg, or have questions about your treatment, feel free to give us a call!

Ask Dr. Vickie Greenberg: When should my child get an orthodontic check-up?
Many parents assume they must wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. Consequently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.
What’s so great about age seven? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for an orthodontist to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites, and open bites can be detected, says Dr. Greenberg.
Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.
Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age 7, give us a call at Vickie Greenberg Orthodontics to schedule an appointment.
